New Helvetia has always been a community-focused brewery with a deep connection to the roots of Sacramento, as well as crafting exceptional beers. We are California’s first cooperatively owned commercial brewery, and we’re driven by the spirit of our surrounding community. Beer is more than a beverage here; it’s a symbol of shared experiences, community sustainability, and the passion of our dedicated team.

Led by a group of individuals who’ve been the heart and soul of the brewery, we’re on a journey to redefine what it means to be a community brewery. Our co-op model ensures we operate through collaboration, reflecting the diverse voices that make up the fabric of our community here in Sacramento. From the first pour to the last sip, every aspect of New Helvetia Brewery Cooperative is infused with transparency, inclusivity, and a commitment to creating a space where everyone feels at home.

We’re inviting you to become a member-owner and help shape the narrative of our beloved brewery. Join us on this adventure to reshape Sacramento’s craft beer scene by investing in the people that make Sacramento great.

Member Owner Questions

  • What is New Helvetia Brewery Co-op?
    • The New Helvetia Brewery Cooperative is a community-driven model where individuals become member-owners by contributing a membership fee of $300. This membership empowers them with a voice in the decision-making processes, making them essential stakeholders in the brewery.
  • Why a Co-op?
    • We have an equal passion for beer and community at New Helvetia. This brewery has been a staple of Broadway for over a decade, and we want to continue to brew beer for Sacramento for years to come. A co-op not only protects the continuity of beloved local businesses, but it also becomes a hub for jobs, training, education, and communal gatherings.
  • What to expect as a member-owner
    • Member-owners hold a significant role in shaping the brewery’s future. They get one vote each, regardless of the number of shares or memberships they own. This voting power extends to the election of the Board of Directors who oversee compliance with laws and by-laws, ensuring a democratic and community-driven governance structure.
  • How are you changing day-to-day operations?
    • The Workers Assembly, composed of our dedicated team, takes charge of day-to-day operations of the business. This ensure that those involved in the daily operations have a direct say in its management.
    • There will be no impact on operations with the transition into a co-op model. The Workers Assembly will assume all duties of operating the taproom and brewery.
  • Who makes major financial decisions?
    • Larger fiscal decisions that impact the overall financial health of the brewery are voted on by the full membership. Smaller decisions will be made by the elected Board of Directors.
    • This democratic approach ensures that critical choices align with the collective interests and vision of the community.
  • Are there any perks to being a member-owner?
    • Member-owners will enjoy various perks, including discounted prices on pints, food, merch, and 4-packs. Additionally, they get exclusive access to Members Only events, as well as priority access for beer releases and ticketed events.
  • How does this benefit the community?
    • The co-op model not only secures the long-term viability of the brewery but also contributes to the local economy by providing jobs, training, education, and acting as a communal meeting space.
